Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth for the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life inside you.

May 18, 2000 Las Vegas Review Journal Despite the wedding-capital-of-the-world hoopla, some Las Vegas wedding chapels turn away couples who want to get hitched -- those who are gay. Little Church of the West, 4617 Las Vegas Blvd. South, happily announced it had peformed nuptials on May 5 for actors Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie. But the Little Church's owner, Greg Smith, says he'd decline to perform a commitment ceremony if celebrity lesbian couple Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche, two actresses, came calling. Marriage of two people of the same sex is not lawful in Nevada -- But commitment ceremonies don't confer any legal status, Chapels or clergy that perform commitment ceremonies usually issue a private certificate of holy union. The paper identifies the partners, the minister, the place and the date they took their vows of fidelity. Independents that won't do commitment ceremonies -- found by a nonscientific telephone spot check -- include the Candlelight Wedding Chapel, 2855 Las Vegas Blvd. South; A Chapel by the Courthouse, 203 E. Bridger Ave.; Chapel of the Bells, 2233 Las Vegas Blvd. South; and A Little White Wedding Chapel, 1301 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Gay couples who wish to be joined in a holy union at a local church or synagogue have to shop around for those of liberal doctrine. |
